Unveiling the Top Choice: Goldendoodle Reigns as Britain’s Most Popular Pup, Outshining the Golden Retriever, Labradoodle, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Research conducted on the Pets4Homes website revealed that the most sought-after dog breeds were the Doberman, maltipoo, and goldendoodle. The goldendoodle, a cross between a golden retriever and a poodle, was the top choice for potential dog owners in 2023, with 995 interested buyers per advertised dog.

The popularity of the goldendoodle surpassed other well-known breeds like the golden retriever, labradoodle, and cavalier King Charles spaniel. Dobermann and maltipoo dogs also ranked high on the list, with 794 and 779 views respectively.

The groodle’s appeal can be attributed to their hypoallergenic coats and gentle nature, making them a favorite among families with young children. However, these dogs come with a hefty price tag of up to £1,600 and require regular exercise.

The increasing demand for dogs and pets in general, especially among young families, may be due to a desire for calm and social animals in the household. In fact, there was a 30% rise in the demand for pets last year, reflecting a growing trend towards welcoming furry companions into the home.

Maltipoo

Dobermann

The Dobermann and Maltipoo breeds took the top two spots in terms of popularity, garnering 794 and 779 views respectively. According to Mr. Lagercrantz, the demand for dogs that are good with young families has increased post-pandemic. Goldendoodles, known for their gentle nature and playfulness, are a favorite among families due to their compatibility with children and other pets. These dogs are not only loved by the general public but are also favored by celebrities. Singer Adele owns two Goldendoodles named Bob and Freddy, and social media sensation Brodie, a Goldendoodle, has amassed 13 million followers across various platforms. Cliff Brush, Brodie’s owner, made $1 million last year from the dog’s viral videos and brand partnerships.

Poodle cross-breeds, like the popular groodle, were among the top searches for dog breeds in 2023, as per Pets4Homes. The maltipoo ranked third on the list, while the labradoodle and cavapoo claimed sixth and seventh spots respectively. The trend of celebrity handbag dogs seems to be fading, with a decline in sales of toy breeds like chihuahuas and French bulldogs by 43 and 41 percent. The decrease in sales can be attributed to health issues commonly found in flat-faced breeds, such as French bulldogs, pugs, cavalier King Charles spaniels, and others.

Miniature Schnauzer

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Miniature Schnauzer were amongst the top ten favorite dogs on the list. Lagercrantz mentioned that it’s still too early to determine if the ban on XL bullies has influenced a shift in breeding practices or the popularity of other breeds.

According to the Pets4Homes industry report, there hasn’t been a noticeable surge in demand for similar ‘muscle dogs’ despite the restrictions on XL bullies. Prices for American bully, cane corso, American bulldog, and chow chow breeds have seen a significant decrease in 2023.

Lagercrantz emphasized the importance of responsible ownership and proper care for muscular dog breeds like XL bullies. The decline in purchases of such breeds suggests that consumers are becoming more aware of the challenges involved in caring for them.

The English Bulldog was identified as the most expensive dog breed in the UK last year, with an average cost of £1,642. Despite economic challenges, there hasn’t been a notable increase in ‘pandemic puppies’ being surrendered due to financial constraints.

The study also reported that the number of dogs over six months old being re-homed or adopted has remained consistent with pre-pandemic levels. In the realm of cats, the Maine Coon emerged as the nation’s favorite breed, known for its dog-like behavior and friendly nature.

Even though breeding activities have decreased, the demand for pets post-pandemic has remained steady, with a 30% increase in potential pet buyers per pet in 2023.
